How to Register a Restricted Firearm in Canada
All restricted and prohibited firearms in Canada must be registered with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Your registration certificate proves that you legally own the firearm and is required to request an Authorization to Transport (ATT). How Do You Complete a Firearm Transfer?
Because handgun transfers are currently frozen, most new registrations are via import or inheritance under strict CFO review. For allowed transfers, both the buyer and seller must contact the RCMP (1-800-731-4000) to initiate the transfer. The RCMP issues a reference number and eventually mails a new registration certificate.
Does a Non-Restricted Firearm Need Registration?
No. The federal non-restricted long-gun registry was abolished in 2012. You do not need to register standard rifles and shotguns with the RCMP. However, residents of Quebec must register non-restricted firearms with the provincial Quebec Firearms Registry.
When Should You Carry Your Registration Certificate?
