What Is the CFSC Practice Test?

The CFSC practice test is a free 40-question exam simulator designed to prepare Canadian firearms licence applicants for the Canadian Firearms Safety Course written exam. This test focuses exclusively on non-restricted firearms โ€” rifles and shotguns โ€” and covers the core topics tested on the official CFSC exam.

The CFSC is the mandatory prerequisite for obtaining a Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) in Canada. The course is approximately 8 hours long, covering safe handling, storage, transportation, ammunition identification, action types, and Canadian firearms law. The written exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions with an 80% passing threshold (40 correct answers required).

What Topics Does the CFSC Exam Cover?

The CFSC exam tests six core knowledge areas: ACTS & PROVE safety procedures, firearm operation and parts, ammunition types and identification, safe handling and carry positions, storage and transport regulations, and Canadian firearms law. Our practice test mirrors this topic distribution with questions weighted similarly to the official exam.

Key non-restricted topics include: bolt-action, pump-action, lever-action, semi-automatic, and break-action mechanisms; rifle vs. shotgun calibre/gauge systems; rimfire vs. centrefire ammunition; shotgun chokes and their effect on shot patterns; field carry positions; zone of fire in group hunting; storage requirements for non-restricted firearms; and transportation regulations including vehicle requirements.

How Is the CFSC Different from the CRFSC?

The CFSC covers non-restricted firearms (rifles and shotguns) and leads to a standard PAL, while the CRFSC covers restricted firearms (primarily handguns) and leads to a Restricted PAL (RPAL). The CFSC is a prerequisite for the CRFSC โ€” you must take the CFSC before or simultaneously with the CRFSC.

If you plan to own handguns, you will need both courses. Most training providers offer a combined weekend course. Practice for both exams: take this CFSC test for non-restricted content, then try our CRFSC practice test for restricted firearms, or take our combined PAL practice test with 50 questions covering both exams.

Common Mistakes on the CFSC Exam

The most frequently missed CFSC questions involve ammunition calibre matching, non-restricted storage requirements, the distinction between action types, and shotgun gauge measurement. Here are the top mistakes and how to avoid them:

  • Confusing gauge and calibre: Gauge applies to shotguns; calibre applies to rifles. Lower gauge numbers mean LARGER bores (12 gauge > 20 gauge).
  • Magazine capacity errors: Semi-auto centrefire rifles: 5 rounds maximum. Semi-auto handguns: 10 rounds. Many students confuse these limits.
  • Storage vs. transport rules: Storage requires a locking device or locked container. Transport requires the firearm to be unloaded.
  • Safety mechanism reliance: A mechanical safety is NOT foolproof and should never replace safe handling practices.
  • Hangfire vs. misfire: Both require waiting at least 60 seconds with the firearm pointed safely before taking any action.
