10 CRFSC & CFSC Exam Tips β Pass on Your First Try
These proven strategies will help you walk into your CFSC or CRFSC exam confident, prepared, and ready to score 80% or higher.
Study the AND vs OR storage rule until it is automatic
Restricted firarms: trigger lock AND locked container (both required). Non-restricted: trigger lock OR locked container OR locked room (any one). This distinction appears on nearly every exam.
Know PROVE in exact order β never skip or reorder steps
P-R-O-V-E must always be performed in this exact sequence. The first step must always be P (Point safely) before doing anything else. Questions often test whether you understand the order matters.
For semi-auto pistols: remove magazine BEFORE cycling the slide
This is the most common CRFSC-specific PROVE mistake. If you rack the slide with the magazine still in, a fresh round chambers β leaving the firearm loaded. Always R (Remove magazine) before O (Observe chamber).
Treat all exam scenarios as if you are in the field
Many questions are scenario-based: "You are at a fence with a rifleβ¦" or "You hand a firearm to a fellow hunterβ¦" Apply ACTS rules and common sense to every scenario rather than looking for trick answers.
Use process of elimination on ambiguous questions
If you are unsure, eliminate obviously wrong answers first. In most cases, the safest and most legally restrictive answer is correct. Canadian firearms law always prioritizes safety over convenience.
Practice with timed simulations
Take practice tests under timed conditions. CFSC: 40 questions in 45 minutes (67.5 seconds per question). CRFSC: 30 questions in 45 minutes (90 seconds per question). Practicing under time pressure prepares you for the real exam.
Sleep well the night before β don't cram the morning of
Memory consolidation happens during sleep. Studying well in the days before and getting a full night's sleep is more effective than last-minute cramming. Arrive rested and calm.
Remember: safety safeties are supplementary β not substitutes for ACTS
A common trick question involves relying on the mechanical safety switch. Always know: mechanical safeties can fail, and ACTS rules (especially trigger discipline) must be followed regardless.
Know the ATT basics cold for the CRFSC
Since 2015, ATT conditions are automatically attached to your RPAL. Know where you can transport (ranges, gunsmiths, dealers), the requirement for a direct route, and how the firearm must be secured during transport.
Flag and return to difficult questions β don't get stuck
If a question stumps you, note it and move on. Return to difficult questions with the remaining time. Running out of time on question 25 because you spent 5 minutes on question 10 costs you marks on easy questions.
