CRFSC, CFSC, PAL, RPAL โ What Do They Mean?
These four acronyms confuse many newcomers to Canadian firearms. Here is what each stands for and how they relate to each other:
| Acronym | Full Name | What It Is |
|---|---|---|
| CFSC | Canadian Firearms Safety Course | A training course (non-restricted firearms) |
| CRFSC | Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course | A training course (restricted firearms) |
| PAL | Possession and Acquisition Licence | A licence (non-restricted firearms) |
| RPAL | Restricted Possession and Acquisition Licence | A licence (restricted + non-restricted firearms) |
Courses vs Licences
The key distinction is: CFSC and CRFSC are courses (training + exams). PAL and RPAL are licences (government-issued cards). You must complete the courses and pass the exams before you can apply for the licences. The CFSC leads to the PAL, and the CFSC + CRFSC together lead to the RPAL.
Which Do You Need?
- Only want rifles and shotguns? Take the CFSC, then apply for a PAL.
- Want handguns? Take both the CFSC and CRFSC, then apply for an RPAL.
- Want everything? Take both courses and apply for an RPAL. An RPAL covers both restricted and non-restricted firearms.
