How to Get Your RPAL: Step-by-Step

Complete step-by-step guide to obtaining your Restricted Possession and Acquisition Licence (RPAL) in Canada.

What Is the RPAL?

The Restricted Possession and Acquisition Licence (RPAL) is the Canadian firearms licence that authorizes you to possess and acquire restricted firearms โ€” primarily handguns. It is issued by the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program and is valid for five years. To get an RPAL, you must complete both the CFSC and CRFSC courses, pass the exams, and submit an application to the RCMP.

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Step 1: Complete the CFSC. Take the Canadian Firearms Safety Course with a certified instructor. Pass the written exam (40 questions, 80% to pass) and practical exam.
  2. Step 2: Complete the CRFSC. Take the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course. Pass the written exam (30 questions, 80% to pass) and practical exam.
  3. Step 3: Collect your certificates. Your instructor will issue CFSC and CRFSC completion certificates, which are required for your application.
  4. Step 4: Complete RCMP Form 5592. Download from the RCMP website or obtain from your instructor. Fill in all sections accurately.
  5. Step 5: Get passport photos. You need two recent passport-style photographs with a guarantor signature on the back.
  6. Step 6: Submit your application. Mail the completed form, certificates, photos, and fee ($80 CAD) to the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program.
  7. Step 7: Wait for processing. Processing typically takes 45 days to 6 months. You may receive a phone call for additional background check questions.
  8. Step 8: Receive your RPAL. Your licence card is mailed to you. It includes an automatic ATT for standard transport routes.

After Getting Your RPAL

  • Join an approved shooting range (required before purchasing restricted firearms)
  • Purchase your first restricted firearm from a licensed dealer
  • Register each restricted firearm individually
  • Ensure your storage meets the AND rule standard
  • Renew your licence before it expires (every 5 years)
