When Should You Renew Your PAL?
Renew your PAL as soon as you receive the RCMP renewal notice, which arrives approximately 6 months before your expiry date. Do not wait until the last month โ processing takes 45โ90+ days. If your PAL expires, you cannot legally possess or use your firearms until the renewal is processed.
What Happens If Your PAL Expires?
If your PAL expires, you are no longer licensed to possess, use, or acquire firearms. Possessing a firearm with an expired PAL is a criminal offence. There is no grace period. You must store your firearms safely (with a licenced individual or at a storage facility) until your renewal is processed.
Do You Need to Retake the Safety Course for Renewal?
No. PAL renewal does not require retaking the CFSC or CRFSC. You simply complete Form CFP 2131 (the same form as a new application), pay the renewal fee, and mail it to your provincial CFO. Your previous course certificates remain valid.
